If you share your home with a gray-muzzled dog or an older cat, you have probably noticed they slow down a little when summer arrives. That is not your imagination. Older pets handle Florida's heat far less efficiently than they did in their younger years, and a little extra attention during the hottest months makes a real difference in their comfort and their health. At Gregory Veterinary Clinic in Carrollwood, senior care is one of the things we love most, and summer is when it matters most.

Why senior pets struggle in the heat
As pets age, their bodies become less able to regulate temperature. Many seniors are also living with conditions that the heat makes worse, like arthritis, heart disease, kidney disease, or breathing problems. A pet with stiff joints may not want to move to a cooler spot, and a pet with a weaker heart has to work harder just to cool down. All of it adds up to an older pet who feels the heat sooner and recovers from it more slowly.
Signs your senior is feeling the heat
Tiring quickly or being reluctant to move during the day
Heavier panting than usual, even at rest
Drinking more, or worryingly, drinking less
Stiffness or trouble getting up that seems worse in the heat
Restlessness or trouble getting comfortable
Keeping your older pet comfortable
A few small adjustments go a long way for a senior pet in the summer:
Keep them indoors with air conditioning during the hottest part of the day
Make sure fresh, cool water is always within easy reach, in more than one spot
Move walks to the cooler early morning or evening hours
Give arthritic pets soft, supportive bedding away from direct sun
Watch their weight, since extra pounds make the heat much harder to handle
Don't skip the senior wellness exam
Older pets benefit from a checkup every six months rather than once a year, because conditions can develop quickly at this stage of life. A senior wellness visit lets us catch arthritis, kidney changes, heart issues, and other problems early, while they are easier to manage, and it is the best way to make sure your pet is set up to handle the summer comfortably. We can also tailor pain management and hydration advice to your specific pet.
Your senior pet has given you years of loyalty, and a comfortable summer is one of the kindest things you can give back. If it has been more than six months since your older dog or cat had a checkup, call Gregory Veterinary Clinic at (813) 592-7339 to schedule their senior wellness exam.
